Breeds of sheep and goats from temperate latitudes show large seasonal variations of their reproductive activity which is under photoperiodic control. In contrast, those from tropical latitudes are non-seasonal breeders, and nutrition is the main factor controlling the annual sexuai activity. In subtropical latitudes, some breeds of sheep and goats display a reproductive seasonality, while others are weakly seasonal or non-seasonal breeders. In some of them, annual seasonal breeding is under photoperiodic control, while in others, nutrition plays an important role in timing the annual breeding season. The identification of the environmental factors responsible for the annual period of sexual rest in males and females is important to improve sheep and goats reproduction. In subtropical breeds, the combination of photoperiod, nutrition and the male effect allow to stimulate the sexual activity of male and female sheep and goats during the non-breeding season.
